Spain has announced that it will lift the measure of wearing the mask outdoors, as the rate of COVID-19 infections has started to fall and hospitals are reporting that the number of patients is also lower.
Wearing the mask outdoors will not be mandatory from Wednesday, Spanish Government spokeswoman Isabel Rodriguez said after the executive held its weekly meeting.
This measure will also apply to students, who will not be required to wear masks during breaks between classes.
However, wearing the mask will continue to be mandatory indoors, including when using public transport, where people will have to keep a distance of 1.5 meters from each other.
The measure of keeping the mask outdoors was decided in December last year, after the increase of cases due to the spread of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus.
According to data from the Spanish Ministry of Health, in the period November 2021 – January 2022, this country reported over 3,400 infections per 100,000 inhabitants. But in the last 14 days, that figure has dropped below 2,000.
Authorities attribute the drop in cases to the high level of vaccination. In Spain, 81 percent of the population is vaccinated against coronavirus. Since the beginning of the pandemic, this state has reported over 94,000 victims.
