People infected with coronavirus in Spain will spend seven days in quarantine instead of the previous ten days, the Ministry of Health announced, although the number of patients in the country is increasing.
“We believe that it is necessary to maintain a balance between public health, mental health and economic growth,” said Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez at a news conference.
The government in Madrid made the decision after the United States reduced the quarantine to five days, Spanish public television TVE reported. In Spain, a country of 47 million people, there were 99,671 young people infected on Wednesday, the most since the epidemic broke out.
The Ministry of Health believes, however, that due to vaccination, 80 percent of the population over the age of 12 no longer need the ten-day quarantine. On Wednesday there were 1360 infected per 100 thousand inhabitants, while a month ago their number was only 49.
To curb a new wave of infection, the government cut the number of spectators to sports matches on Wednesday. In football stadiums, the stands of which have so far been allowed to be completely filled, 75 percent of the capacity will be allowed, while in the halls the allowed capacity will be 50 percent.
As of December 24, the mandatory wearing of masks on the streets and other open spaces has been reintroduced throughout Spain, as well as indoors. Each of the 17 autonomous provinces is also introducing its own measures, so the northern provinces of the Basque country, Galicia and La Rioja closed their nightclub facilities this week.
