South African President Cyril Ramaphosa was diagnosed with coronavirus. His office announced Monday that the president is being treated for mild symptoms.
Ramaphosa began to feel unwell on Sunday, December 12, after attending the funeral of former South African President FW de Klerk.
Ramaphosa’s responsibilities as president now passed to his deputy, David Mabuza, for at least a week.
Ramaphosa is fully vaccinated and after the infection called on citizens to be vaccinated.
“Vaccination remains the best protection against serious illness and hospitalization,” he said.
Its site is the epicenter of a new variant of the coronavirus, known as Omicron, which was first discovered last month.
Since then, it has spread to dozens of countries around the world. The World Health Organization has described this option as worrying.
