Aid workers say children are dying of hunger ‘before our eyes’ as G7 leaders have warned that only ‘massive’ and urgent funding can avert the hunger crisis.
In a message from G7 leaders that meetings are starting on the issue in GermanyMichael Dunford, of the World Food Program (WFP) said governments should make large donations to avoid catastrophe in the Cape of Africa country.
“The famine crisis in Somalia cannot be avoided unless there are massive contributions from now on. At this point a massive investment in humanitarian aid is needed from all partners, coming together to avoid this.
The Cape of Africa continues to suffer from the shocking drought of several seasons, which has made 89 million people in East Africa considered at risk of starvation.
“Unfortunately this trend cannot be reduced but it is accelerating,” Dunford said.
The most severely affected country is Somalia, where the catastrophic famine has begun.
Claire Sanford, deputy humanitarian director of an international aid organization, said on a recent visit she had met mothers who had buried several children, and other survivors were suffering from severe malnutrition.
“In the 23 years of humanitarian crises I have seen, in terms of the consequences for children, this is the worst. “Famine deaths in Somalia have escalated worse than expected.”
“The international community has failed even though in the 2011 crisis, we pledged not to allow this to happen again,” she added.
“We see children dying before our eyes, populations losing their livelihoods. Not that we did not understand the lessons of 2011; there was much to learn from that crisis. The measures have not been implemented due to lack of funds. “
