At least 21 people have died after heavy snow blocked their vehicles in northern Pakistan. Pakistani rescue service Rescue has published the list with the names of 21 victims. It is learned that among the victims is also a police officer, his wife and six children.
Police confirm that the officer’s family died from the cold in their car, while it has not yet been made clear whether the other victims died from the same cause or from carbon monoxide poisoning they inhaled inside their vehicles.
About 1,000 vehicles were stranded on a highway during a storm, according to Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid. Murree is a mountain resort town north of the capital Islamabad. Local media reported on Friday that tourists were being stranded due to snow. More than 100,000 cars had entered Murree in recent days to see the extremely heavy snowfall. This caused a major traffic jam on roads leading in and out of the city, police said.
Pakistani Interior Minister Sheikh Rahid Ahmed said the army has been mobilized to clear roads and help thousands of people who are still stranded on the highway. Videos posted on social networks show vehicles blocked on the road with a meter of snow on them.
“People are facing a terrible situation,” a citizen told AFP. Meanwhile, Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan has expressed shock but also indignation at the tragedy.
