Slovakia on Monday received the first 200,000 doses of the Russian coronavirus vaccine, Sputnik V.
This is the second country in the European Union, after Hungary, to provide this vaccine.
Last week, Slovakia had the world’s highest death rate per capita from coronavirus.
“It is OK to buy the Russian vaccine, because COVID-19 [sëmundja që e shkakton koronavirusi] “I know nothing about geopolitics,” said Slovak Prime Minister Igor Matovic.
“I have no problem getting the Sputnik vaccine,” he added.
Slovakia has bought two million Sputnik V vaccines and expects half of them to arrive this month.
Slovak Health Minister Marek Krajci said Sputnik V vaccination could begin within weeks.
In neighboring Czech Republic, Prime Minister Andrej Babis said his country could also use the Sputnik V vaccine to fight the pandemic.
Russia approved its vaccine in August, becoming the first country in the world with the coronavirus vaccine.
This has led scientists around the world to question its safety and efficacy, as it was recorded before the third phase of testing studies became available.
But in early February, test results published in the global medical journal The Lancet showed that Sputnik V – the two-dose vaccine – was 91.6 percent effective against the coronavirus.
This percentage is similar to that of vaccines developed in the West.
The Russian vaccine has been approved for use in about 30 countries.
