American actor Will Smith has resigned from the Oscars Academy after slapping comedian Chris Rock during the Oscars Awards ceremony held last Sunday.
“My actions at the 94th edition of the Oscars were shocking, painful and unforgivable,” the actor said in a statement.
The academy said it had accepted his resignation and would continue to “move forward” with disciplinary proceedings.
Smith slapped comedian Rock after the latter made a joke about the shaved head of the actor’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, who suffers from alopecia.
Minutes later he won the Best Actor Award for his role in the film King Richard, where Smith portrayed the father of tennis players Venus and Serena Williams.
Smith’s resignation, according to the Hollywood Reporter, means he can no longer vote for the Oscars, but can be nominated in the future and retain the award he has won.
“The list of those I have hurt is long and includes Chris, his family, many of my friends and loved ones, all those present and viewers watching us from home,” Smith said in a statement.
“I betrayed the trust of the Academy. I deprived the nominees and winners of the opportunity to celebrate and honor their outstanding work. “I am heartbroken,” added the American actor.
The director of the Academy, David Rubin, said that he has accepted Smith’s resignation and that he will continue with the disciplinary proceedings.
So far there are few people who have been excluded from the Oscars: Harvey Weinstein, Bill Cosb and Roman Polansky. It is still unclear what disciplinary action the Academy will take against Smith.
The Oscars have said that proceedings will continue against Smith, leaving open the possibility of him receiving the Oscar, although this is said to be unlikely to happen and there is a possibility that he will not be allowed to attend the ceremonies. next Oscars./rel
