The Macedonian Assembly approves the French proposal, negotiations will open next week
With the signing of the protocol, the way is opened for holding the first intergovernmental political conference of North Macedonia and the EU.
The joint intergovernmental commission is part of the obligations arising from the Treaty of Friendship, Good Neighborliness and Cooperation signed between the two countries in 2017.
The signing of the protocol comes a day after the Assembly of North Macedonia approved the French proposal, which paves the way for the integration of Skopje in the EU. After the approval, EU officials warned that negotiations for membership in the bloc for Skopje and Tirana will be opened next week.
For almost two years, Bulgaria, a member state of the EU, maintained its veto on the start of negotiations between the bloc and Skopje, due to disagreements regarding Macedonian history and language.
