Ranil Wickremesinghe went from Prime Minister of Sri Lanka to President in just a few days.
His predecessor, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, fled the country and resigned after months of mass protests over the country’s economic crisis.
Wickremesinghe will face the challenge of fixing the economic collapse the country has been experiencing for some time.
Despite the fact that the new president has taken office, he has not been well received by the people who have declared that they will continue the protests again.
The people of Sri Lanka are extremely disappointed by the mismanagement of the economic crisis that the country experienced.
History of Ranil Wickremesinghe in Politics:
Wickremesinghe, a senior lawmaker and leader of the United National Party (UNP) that once ruled Sri Lanka, ran for president twice and lost in 1999 and 2005.
According to the BBC, around the turn of the century, he was a real contender to lead the country, but his star then faded.
He was prime minister six times, but never served a full term.
His last stint as prime minister began in May, when he was appointed to the post in an ultimately unsuccessful bid by Mr Rajapaksa to ascend to the post.
The new president took office on July 13, when his predecessor fled.
