A day of winter fun turned into tragedy when a group of skaters fell into the water from breaking the ice at the famous panoramic site of Lake Tahoe in California, one of whom lost his life.
Eight amateurs were skating on ice before the incident last Saturday, according to the Sierra County sheriff. Two of them managed to avoid falling into the cold water and helped the others return to land.
Unfortunately the group failed to find one of their friends who was subsequently sought after by numerous emergency groups who came to the scene.
Professional divers searched the reservoir but the victim was found just a day later. His body was recovered from about 12 feet deep in water and ice, and was later identified as 72-year-old William Smallfield, the local Reno-Gazette Journal reported.
It is not clear what caused the ice to collapse, but firefighters said the reservoir has unique conditions and strong currents under the ice may have caused it to soften.
They add that reservoir ice can form in some layers mixed with water, to an unstabilized extent compared to the ice of a natural lake.
Yesterday officials stopped on-site skating activity.
“The weather here has frequent ups and downs, without creating security on the ice of lakes or reservoirs. “Despite the low temperatures of the night, we should not stand on the ice,” said local fire chief Adam Mayberry.
