In the latest scandal of immigrant centers in Italy, six Egyptians have been arrested in Sicily after 10 underage girls were raped by them in a reception center in southern Italy.
Police said the victims were from Egypt and Tunisia, and were all minors allegedly being held in coronavirus quarantine.
Five of the Egyptian detainees were under 18 years old while one is an adult. They have been arrested on charges of hostage-taking and rape.
The rapists regularly went to the girls’ separation of the Villa Sikania center where they committed the crimes, police said.
The victims indicated that the attackers went to the large waiting room at night, where they forced the girls to perform sexual acts.
They threatened them and blackmailed them to remain silent about the abuses.
Immigrants to reception centers begin Covid isolation immediately upon entry into Sicily.
Police said they are continuing investigations to uncover other potential abusers after the crime came to light.
They said this could reveal other episodes of sexual violence and crimes against the person or property.
Villa Sikania Center is managed by a private association and has been used for several years in this function.
There have been previous riots, immigrants fleeing and numerous sexual abuses, writes the Italian daily La Stampa.
