Two sisters are reported to have messed up their grooms during a double marriage in India.
The British daily Metro wrote that Nikita was to marry a man named Bhola, while her sister Karishma was to marry Ganesh.
Many friends and family had gathered for the evening ceremony in the village of Aslana in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh.
But the ceremony was plunged into darkness by a sudden power outage.
During the chaos that ensued, the wedding parties and guests wandered around in the darkness that had covered the building.
When it became clear that the electricity would not be restored soon, the priest decided to continue the procedure to close his ‘working day’.
But unknowingly Nikita and Karishma had changed chairs. The girls were dressed in similar red dresses and flower veils darkened their faces
The British daily Independent reports: “Some pre-marriage rituals were performed by them with the wrong partner and the family realized the mistake.”
The hand of one bride was given to the wrong groom by the darkness. Power outages are becoming commonplace in Indian villages.
Local media added that the riot started after the father of the girls, Rameshlal Railot, organized the major wedding for both his son and his three daughters.
Railot described the power outage as a ‘shame’ but added with relief that the mistake was understood before the wrong couples exchanged marriage vows.
It is not clear if the girls knew the men they were marrying, local media wrote.
High temperatures in India have caused an increase in energy demand and some companies have cut off energy as a reaction to the situation.
