British Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton has taken the royal cavalry title today, despite the disappointment of last week’s race in Abu Dhabi.
The 36-year-old was given the highest honor by Prince Charles at Windsor Castle.
He was accompanied at the ceremony by his mother Carmen Larbalestier, who along with his father Anthony, have been enthusiastic supporters of his motorsport career.
Seven-time world champion Hamilton received the award for his contributions to the sport, joining other Britons such as Sir Jackie Stewart, Sir Stirling Moss and Sir Jack Brabham to become the fourth honored F1 driver.
The development comes days after Hamilton dramatically lost the race to give him his eighth F1 title as he overtook the Dutchman in the final laps. Max Verstappen in the Abu Dhabi race.
Hamilton had an 11-second advantage over his rival Verstappen when the race was slowed by the exit of the safety car.
The Red Bull team took advantage of the stoppage by pulling out Verstappen earlier with fresh tires and in the final lap he emerged victorious.
Hamilton is already regarded as the best athlete in the history of Formula 1 with the highest number of races won, 103, and podium places, 182.
Hamilton grew up in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, with parents Anthony and Carmen.
Hamilton’s parents separated when he was two years old and he lived with his mother and two half-sisters Samantha and Nicola, until he was 12 years old.
He then lived with his father and stepmother Linda, and began participating in children’s go-kart races, until he became the youngest British pilot in the low category, at the age of 10 years.
He debuted at the GP2 in 2006 winning the first attempt.
Hamilton signed his first contract with Formula 1 club McLaren in the 2007 season, winning the championship a year later.
