The first warship to transport submarines during the First World War, on behalf of Japan, was recently discovered, in the depths of the Adriatic, in the Gulf of Durres.
The ship “Verbano” sank in November 1918 after colliding with two naval mines while sailing from Kotor to Libya. Then owned by the Royal Italian Navy, today this object is added to the map of underwater archeology of Durres, further enriching it.
“An important discovery that confirms once again the high archaeological and historical potential that the Gulf of Durrës has. It represents one more document, if we will consider the ship “Verbano”, which contributes to the clarification of the situation, days after the end of LIB. We have the end of the life of this ship. A ship that for the first time was conceived as a ship that transported submarines and this has found wide coverage at that time in the press of the time and specialized magazines “, said Adrian Anastasi, underwater archaeologist.
With the discovery of this object, Albanian underwater archeology marks another achievement. For the first time, the technical group of divers, part of the project of the Institute of Archeology for the creation of the map of the underwater heritage of Durrës, breaks a record of depth.
“Andrea Bada and Denis Nova are two technical divers specialized in great depths. At a level of difficulty for the first time in Albania, the depths up to 50 meters are overcome and we pass to the real study where we have data that we can find important relics, be they of antiquity, or more modern periods “, said Anastasi.
This finding has brought a lot of interest in neighboring Italy, not only for the historical values of this ship, but also for the human ones it carries. Most of the military crew lost their lives in it.
“A documentary is being prepared by RAI Storia. “When there are drownings and there are victims, of course this is an important relic in terms of history as it belongs to LIB, it is considered a grave and deserves all the respect from a human point of view,” he said.
But will this facility soon be part of the underwater tourist offer of Durrës?
“It is very deep, we are 90 meters, and outside the classic diving standards that underwater enthusiasts do. It requires very high technique to get there. There is also a lack of health infrastructure to guarantee safety. Yes, cameras can be installed with a transmission system and on the screens of the Archaeological Museum of Durrës, visitors can see it in real time. “These forms also serve to protect it from clandestine damage and why it is difficult at these levels”, said the archaeologist.
