Sex offenders will be offered chemical castration in Thailand in a new initiative to reduce recidivism, as the country’s MPs have approved the procedure.
Offenders deemed likely to repeat their sex crimes after release will be given the option of a testosterone-lowering injection in exchange for a reduced prison term.
The procedure will require the approval of two doctors and offenders will be monitored for 10 years and will have to wear an electronic monitoring bracelet.
The law, passed by parliament in March, was approved this week and requires only royal assent.
If approved, Thailand joins a small number of countries that use chemical castration for dangerous sex offenders such as some US states, Russia, South Korea, Poland and Estonia.
“I want the law to pass as soon as possible,” said local justice minister Somsak Thepsuthin. “I don’t want to hear any more attacks on women and girls.”
One of the critics of the measure, Jaded Chouwilai, the activist of the “progressive” movement against sexual assaults, said that the convicts should be rehabilitated by changing their mindset in prison.
“Punishments such as execution or chemical castration reinforce the idea that the condemned cannot be rehabilitated.
Last year, a similar measure was announced by Pakistan.
