Lake Mead, the largest reservoir in the United States that stores water for tens of millions of people and countless acres of farmland in the Southwest, is shrinking at an alarming rate due to periods of drought.
Visitor Adam Dailey said: I’ve been coming to Lake Mead for about 15 years now and it’s kind of sad what’s going on. But we still go out and try to enjoy it when we can.
“The water line used to be very high, and it wasn’t a problem when you wanted to take a boat, but now we can’t, the level has dropped too much”Zacher said.
Weather experts say two decades of drought combined with human-caused global warming have transformed the reservoir created in the 1930s.
The rocks that form the hard edges of the reservoir provide a clear illustration of how far the water levels have fallen.
Researchers say that in terms of climate, Lake Mead is like a baby that has existed for less than 90 years. But in human terms, it is disappearing at an astonishing rate.
