At least seven students have died and five were seriously injured when they fell from the collapse of the railing of a fourth-floor corridor in a university building.
The tragedy occurred at El Alto State University (UPEA) in a small town near La Paz in Bolivia, when the metal railing was shattered by pressure from a large group of students.
The serious tragedy was shot in a creepy video published by the British daily ‘Metro’, where a large group of students are seen gathered in the corridor in front of the financial sciences hall of the institution.
The balcony railing is seen to be tragically broken by the weight of students pushing and pulling each other, causing the victims to fall towards their deaths.
The gruesome footage shows students clinging to each other in panic to escape the fall, and others screaming in horror.
Health Minister Jayson Auza confirmed that seven students have lost their lives, and four others are in serious condition. All the victims were from 19 to 27 years old, writes the daily El Tiempo. Bolivian police are investigating the circumstances of the accident that shocked the country.
Questions are being raised as to why more than 60 students had gathered in the hallway, at a time when gatherings have been limited and by the coronavirus pandemic.
Prosecutor Marco Antonio Cossío told a news conference: “We will raise formal charges of murder and grievous bodily harm against several persons.”
