Serious images posted on social media from Ukraine show locals sometimes women and children, tied up, naked or beaten, in what appear to be self-inflicted “voluntary” attacks in the absence of civil order.
Since the start of the occupation last month there have been reports of public humiliation and sentences handed down by citizens themselves to people accused of being ‘robbers or saboteurs’.
In some of these IMAGE British Daily Mail wrote that they showed “how Ukrainians are fighting criminals in the absence of law.”
But a series of images show extreme corporal punishment given to victims linked by seemingly paramilitary groups and members of the public, whose purpose is not understood.
A video that quickly spread on Twitter received millions of clicks after being published by user “Juan Sinmiedo” on Sunday.
He wrote: “Hundreds of civilians are being punished in Ukraine for various reasons by paramilitary groups and the national guard. “Torture, abuse and shame, even minors and girls.”
“There are no clear motives for these abuses, but all the victims are labeled ‘robbers’ and may include suspected sympathizers with Russians or people seeking food to survive.”
The publisher added: “We do not know the real reasons for this behavior but it is clear that it is against human rights conventions. “There is no justification for that.”

Marko Pavlyshyn, Professor of Ukrainian Studies at Monash University in Melbourne, said the footage was very serious and the practices were disrespectful.
He said victims were often labeled with the word “maroder” (мародер), meaning “robber” in both Russian and Ukrainian.
Analyzing the footage, Pavlyshyn said that “I do not see or hear anything in the video that supports the fact that the victims are being punished for sympathy with Russia, that they do not want to fight against Russia.”
“In one of the videos the person is being beaten because he had tried to set fire to something I could not identify phonetically from the speaker,” he added, according to the Australian network. news.com.au
