Several hundred people gathered today in the Serbian capital Belgrade for the march known as the ‘Immortal Regiment’, in memory of veterans killed during World War II.
The march took place today, the day Russia held the Victory Day military parade against Nazi forces in World War II.
Many of the banners showed support for Russia’s war in Ukraine, with cropped pictures of Vladimir Putin and Russian military symbols “Z”.
Serbia aspires to join the European Union but is a traditional ally of Russia and has rejected sanctions against Moscow for invading Ukraine.
Many Serbs see the Kremlin in a positive light as Putin sees Serbia as his most credible position in Europe.
Pro-Russian marches in support of Moscow’s military attack on Ukraine have been held in Serbia before.
Today’s march ended at the “Cemetery of the Liberators” where representatives of Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Serbia laid wreaths.
“People need to remember, because it is easy to forget what happened in World War II, that’s why we have such a situation in Ukraine,” local 31-year-old Marija Devric told AFP.
