Health workers in one of the four Serb-majority municipalities in northern Kosovo were warned this week that they cannot use their annual vacations in the coming period, citing the “unstable political” situation.
The same verbal warning was given to other institutions in this part of Kosovo, which Serbia finances. “We are all surprised,” a doctor told Radio Free Europe.
“People have paid thousands of euros for summer arrangements“, he adds. The person insisted on remaining anonymous for fear of losing his job. “In the meeting of the heads of departments with the head nurses, it was said verbatim that annual vacations are strictly prohibited. In the event that any of the department heads approves his employees (holidays), he will be replaced immediately“, says another interlocutor of REL, also from the field of health.
Workers in other sectors, such as education, who asked not to be identified, do not hide their anger either. “The director told us yesterday that there is no break until further notice and that we are obliged to report to work, without explanation. As it is said, this is the order of the Ministry of Education (of Serbia). We are powerless, we are mixed with fear, anger and bitterness”, said an employee from the education system. This is happening after the Government of Kosovo, on June 29, imposed on Serbia reciprocal measures related to personal documents, as well as the decision to re-register cars with city plates in Kosovo issued by the Serbian authorities, on RKS (Republic of Kosovo) plates.
Official Prishtina considered those plates that were used mainly in the north of Kosovo to be illegal for years, but did not react, as it is reacting this time. A large number of Serbs in Kosovo are employed in Serbian institutions, and depend on the salaries provided by Belgrade.
