Serbia opened a new chapter in European Union membership negotiations.
At the intergovernmental conference, the fourth chapter was opened, dealing with transport policy, energy, trans-European networks, environmental protection and climate change.
Speaking on behalf of the EU, Slovenian Secretary of State Gasper Dovzhan described the move as a success of the Slovenian Presidency, a step that will affect the dynamics of the negotiation process.
He said, however, that despite the progress made, Serbia needs to do more in reforming the justice system, the fight against organized crime and corruption, as well as in the internal processes of war crimes cases.
She was asked to play a constructive role in the dialogue with Kosovo and this “will determine the dynamics of membership negotiations”.
Enlargement Commissioner Oliver Varhelyi described the opening of the four chapters in the negotiations with Serbia as “an important signal not only for this country, but also for the entire Western Balkans region”.
Serbian Prime Minister Ana Bernabic said her country expects the opening of other chapters soon.
She announced Serbia ‘s major investments in the field of environmental protection, one of the topics included in the recently opened chapters.
Serbia now turns out to have opened 22 of the 35 chapters in the negotiation process with the European bloc.
