A statement by Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) MP Dragan Shormaz has been interpreted as the latest sign of dissatisfaction with Russia even among members or supporters of Aleksandar Vucic’s political force in Serbia.
Shormaz, quoted by the media in Kosovo, said that in the July 2020 protests in his country, members of the infamous Russian paramilitary group Wagner had also participated.
We know this, he explained, for the simple reason that some arrested members of this paramilitary group have been arrested. “Russian Wagner members took part in the protest.
“This is a fact, because we handcuffed them”, said the legislator. He also said that a large number of diplomats at the Russian Embassy in Belgrade are involved in the action against the interests of Serbia.
“Our services have data on this and it would be easy to react in this regard.”, he underlined. The 2020 demonstrations in Belgrade and various cities in Serbia were violently suppressed by the police.
The Wagner group allegedly recruited, trained and sent private military operatives to conflict zones around the world to engage in violence, looting of natural resources and intimidation of civilians in violation of international human rights law. It is led by an oligarch close to Vladimir Putin, Yevgeny Prigozhin, and has backed pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine.
