A Russian diplomat serving in the Permanent Mission to the United Nations in Geneva has announced his resignation as a sign of protest against Russia’s continued occupation of Ukraine, saying “enough is enough”.
I have never felt so ashamed of my country in 20 years of career, wrote Boris Bondarev in his decision. ““Putin’s aggressive war in Ukraine, and in fact against the whole West, is not only a crime against the Ukrainian people, but, perhaps, the most serious crime against the people of Russia.”
Bondarev, who becomes the top diplomat to take such a step, said those who conceived of the war wanted only one thing, to stay in power forever.
In the 20 years of his service, he said, the level of lies and unprofessionalism in the Russian Foreign Ministry “has increased all the time” and, in recent years, has become “simply catastrophic”.
In an interview with the BBC after announcing the decision, he said that although his resignation would not change things, he said “it could be a small brick in the biggest wall that would eventually be built”.
Asked if he believed he would be considered a traitor, Bondarev said: “I think they are already considering me as such“.
