The Prime Minister Edi Rama and the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Olta Xhaçka leave today for the United States of America, within the Presidency of Albania in the UN Security Council June 1 – June 30, 2022.
On the morning of June 2, Prime Minister Rama will lead the open high-level debate of the Security Council on international accountability, as one of the priorities of our country in the Security Council, further emphasized due to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. .
Bringing to justice violators of international law, whether states or individuals, requires the strong cooperation of all peace-loving states, starting with members of the Security Council. The debate chaired by PM Rama marks the beginning of the implementation of the work plan of the Presidency of Albania in the Security Council.
The meetings chaired by PM Rama will be followed by several other marking activities, during the month of June, including at the Ministerial level, such as:
– Open debate led by MFA Olta Xhaçka, on the topic Women, Peace and Security, with the theme “The role of regional organizations in the implementation of GPS in situations of political unrest and violent seizure of power” (June 15);
– Information session, chaired by MFA Olta Xhaçka, on cooperation between the UN and regional organizations, where the European Union will be invited (June 16);
– Open Debate on the Working Methods of the Security Council, chaired by the Ambassador of the Republic of Albania to the UN, NY (June 28).
This is the first time that Albania holds the presidency of the SC during its two-year term in the Council. Next year, Albania will have the presidency a few months before the end of its mandate, in October 2023. The work program of this presidency best connects Albania’s priorities in the Security Council with the most important international security developments, such as the war in Ukraine. .
During their stay in New York, the PM and the MFA will be received in meetings by the UN Secretary General, António Guterres, as well as by the US Ambassador to the UN, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, a meeting in the framework of the joint venture that Albania and the US have concluded. with Ukraine. The United States held the presidency of the Security Council in May.
