When the main ship of the Ukrainian Navy was close enough to the shore near the coast of Russia to be broadcast by the state television channels of the country, Captain Oleksandr Hryhorevskyi did not initially understand the fuss about his outdated and rusty vehicle!
The appearance of his more than 50-year-old ship – called the Donbas – as the eastern region of the country embroiled in an eight-year conflict between pro-Russian separatists has dominated Russian television broadcasts.
With about 100,000 Russian troops piled up on the Ukrainian border, it now appears that only the spark for the start of the big clash is expected, and it is no wonder it comes from friction in the Sea of Azov, says the Washington Post.
Russia’s main domestic intelligence agency, the FSB, accused Donbas of sailing into the Kerch Strait, the waterway between mainland Russia and annexed Crimea, while failing to present a pass. The FSB said Donbas ignored instructions to correct the course – and the move was quickly labeled a “provocation”. Margarita Simonyan, editor-in-chief of the government-funded RT TV channel, wrote on Twitter:
“Did the war start?” Do not disappoint us now! The noise of the war faded when Donbas returned without reaching the Kerch Strait. The incident, however, fueled fears of conflict as the Sea of Azov remains one of the places where the risk of starting a war is very high.
