Italy declared a state of emergency in five regions near the Po River, facing the worst drought in 70 years, and decided to allocate some emergency funds to them.
Emilia-Romagna, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Lombardy, Piedmont and Veneto will receive 36.5 million euros in emergency funds to alleviate the crisis caused there by the lack of water. A number of areas have already begun cutting off supplies as the country grapples with an unusually early heatwave and lack of rainfall.
“The declaration of the state of emergency aims to manage the current situation through the adoption of extraordinary measures, which will continue if the situation does not improve,” the government statement said.

According to the country’s largest agricultural union, Coldiretti, the drought threatens more than 30 percent of national agricultural production and half of the farms in the affected areas.
