The “Naim Frashëri” school in Korçë continues to remain a segregated educational institution, as 95% of the students who attend it belong to the Roma and Egyptian community.
Although 7 years have passed since the parents’ complaint in this school, this year, no measures have been taken either by the regional directorate of education or by the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth for inclusiveness.
According to Etleva Tare, Specialist of the Regional Office of the Commissioner for Protection from Discrimination, there are several possibilities that will provide all inclusion, such as the enrollment in this school of students who come from administrative units.
There were more than 30 women who submitted their complaint to the commissioner, while in 2017 only 5 took the case to the Strasbourg court.
On June 4, 2022, this court decides that these women should be compensated with 4,500 euros. The reason for the segregation in this school is the policy of assistance from the central government, which offered food packages to the children of the Roma and Egyptian community.
During the 2021-2022 school year, this school was attended by 146 students, the majority of whom belonged to the Roma and Egyptian communities, and registrations for the first grade have already begun. It remains to be seen whether measures will be taken to inclusiveness.
