German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to order a halt to Moscow’s attack on Ukraine, and to enable diplomatic solutions, while avoiding a humanitarian catastrophe.
Scholz’s office said in a statement that the two leaders had spoken on the phone for nearly an hour about “the war in Ukraine and efforts to end it.”
No other details were given, but the Kremlin said in another statement that “the Russian side is ready to seek a solution, in accordance with its principled approaches.”
More than 187,000 people have fled to Germany since Moscow’s unprovoked attack on Ukraine, the interior ministry said in Berlin.
More than two million refugees have entered Poland and some of them have since moved to other countries.
