The expected granting of candidate status to Ukraine in the EU has prompted German Chancellor Scholz to call for EU reforms.
Scholz also demanded that the bloc move towards opening negotiations with Albania and northern Macedonia.
“Apart from the candidates, the EU itself must prepare for the enlargement of the union,” the Social Democrat politician said in an interview with the German news agency DPA.This requires the EU to modernize its decision-making structures and processes. It will not always be possible to decide on the unanimous principle all those decisions that must be made today unanimously.”
Scholz said he would talk about it at the EU summit in late June.
He said that he hopes that the EU summit will give an impetus to the countries of the Western Balkans, which he has recently visited, and which have been waiting for EU membership for two decades.
“We have to show the countries of the Western Balkans that we take it seriously. “Albania and Northern Macedonia meet all the criteria for opening concrete negotiations for EU membership, they must start now.”
Candidate status can only be granted by a unanimous vote. The softening of this principle has long been discussed in the EU. The European Parliament had called a week ago for extended reforms of the European convention and to abandon the principle of unanimous decision in almost all areas of politics.
