The UK could face a severe wave from the new variant of the coronavirus, Omicron in January if it does not impose new measures, scientists claim.
The death toll from this coronavirus variant by the end of April 2022 could range from 25,000 to 75,000 people, depending on vaccination performance, the scientists added.
In the worst case scenario, tougher measures will be needed so that hospitals are not overburdened with patients, stands the warning.
The study by the London School of Tropical Hygiene and Medicine however does not specify results. It does not mention what might happen to the new variant of the coronavirus, Omicron but offers a series of possible scenarios.
The doctor, Nick Davies, one of the researchers, said that Omicron is spreading rapidly and this “remains a concern” until it is expected to be the dominant form of the virus in England by the end of the year.
According to the report, the number of infected people is currently doubling every 2.4 days in England, despite the fact that the vaccination rate in the country is very high.
Based on these data, the spread of the new variant of COVID-19 is faster compared to the original form of the virus when no one was vaccinated./ REL
