The number of patients affected by heart attacks in Kosovo has increased significantly. In the Cardiosurgery Clinic, in the last three months, 561 patients with heart attacks, or 6 patients per day, have sought help.
This disease is also affecting 30-year-olds, despite the fact that it is more widespread among older people. The reason for the increase in the number of people with heart attacks is suspected to be both COVID and the heat.
Since the beginning of this year, over 3,000 patients have been admitted to this clinic as a result of heart attacks and other cardiovascular diseases, while over 100 patients have lost their lives.
The patients who are mostly treated for heart attacks are those over the age of 60, but young people are not excluded. While the lack of beds remains a problem in the Cardiology Clinic.
Fisnik Hima, cardiologist at KKUK, in an interview for KosovaPress, said that there is an increase in the number of heart attack cases, as there are admissions of patients from all over Kosovo.
Hima: The number of heart attack patients is increasing day by day. In the last three months of this year, we have a total of 561 patients with acute myocardial infarction, which means that there were about 187 patients per month with a heart attack, that is, six or seven patients with a heart attack per day… As for the six months of the year 2022, we have patients with days of treatment, a total of 13,339 days of treatment, we have 3,009 patients lying down, including patients with other cardiovascular diseases. As well as for six months, the number of patients who unfortunately died was 105 patients. Day by day we are increasing the number of patients with heart attacks because we have admissions of patients from all regions of Kosovo.
Hima said that they need more beds.
Hima: We have a capacity of 75 beds in the Cardiology Clinic at the moment, which means that we still need a larger number of beds, because the increase in patients with acute myocardial infarction but also with other cardiovascular diseases is increasing. above, and compared to last year we have a bigger increase… Maybe in the summer months the number increases a little because of the great heat that reigns in our territories.
According to Dr. Himes, the male gender has been more affected by heart attacks. Likewise, young people are also affected.
Hima: We also have 30-year-old patients who come with a heart attack. The heart attack affects all ages, without sparing both genders… Maybe the male gender has been attacked a little more than the female gender… We have a larger number of cases in patients over the age 65-year-old, but it does not mean that we do not have cases of young patients, we also have patients aged 30 or 35 who come with acute myocardial infarction… Patients who come with acute myocardial infarction do not mean who come with pain, we have patients who come without chest pain, but have also experienced myocardial infarction. Usually these patients undergo urgent cornography procedures and some of them are stented, some of them remain for cardiosurgical revascularization. But it happens that even after an acute myocardial infarction, most patients feel well, but there are also cases when the condition worsens.
Meanwhile, according to him, the increase in the number of cases may also be influenced by COVID, but there is still no reliable data that supports this thesis.
Hima: The biggest number has increased, maybe the COVID may have had a little impact, but we are not sure about that, we still don’t have certain data whether it has had an impact or not, but it means it has had an impact as well as it seems and atmospheric conditions.
Meanwhile, Dr. Hima has added that with frequent and regular check-ups by the cardiologist, patients can prevent heart attacks./KosovaPress
