Some wax works represent a frightening resemblance to their real-life figures, so much so that sometimes the spectator has to focus twice.
But on a recent visit to the German museum Panoptikum, it was discovered that the wax sculpture of the Queen of England had her hairless head, under her traditional hat.
The wax face of the monarch was the same as the original in all its details, but it became quite frightening when the hat was lifted and the shaved head made it look like an ugly man.
Dr Susanne Faerber, one of the managers of the museum in Hamburg, spoke to the British daily Daily Mail as he combed the hair of the statue that had been installed only on the sides of the head.
“Since we use real human hair in wax models, they are expensive and some of the figures do not have full hair,” she explains.
“We only set the amount of hair seen by visitors.”
When asked if the cherished head was disrespectful to the queen, the host said: “It is a wax sculpture, it is not the real person, this should be taken into account by everyone.”
“Then Her Majesty’s position in Germany is different, for example, from that in England, where the press has to be more careful with these issues.”
Shocking views of the 95-year-old monarch sculpture come on the first day of the museum’s opening to the public. Every year in January the complex closes for renovation and maintenance works of the statues and their accessories.
The Panopticum Museum has more than 120 wax figures, including Donald Trump, Pope Benedict XVI, or former Chancellor Angela Merkel.
It was first opened by Faerber’s great-grandfather in 1879.
