A video in which Greek police rapid intervention police officers are seen, has made the rounds of the network.
In the video shot at noon on Sunday, it is clear that a police patrol initially stops a resident of the area in the Nea Zmirni neighborhood of Athens, and then rapes another citizen for no reason.
Police violence took place in the middle of the central square of the neighborhood, at the moment when in this square were dozens of residents of the capital who had gone out for their walk, within the band and conditions of restriction of movement dictated by the Hellenic government as a preventive measure for covid .
Upon the arrival of the patrol in the area, the residents reacted by asking the agents not to disturb them as they only wanted to stay in the square for a few moments, but the police reaction was extreme, unnecessarily harassing the residents of the area, several witnesses said.
The scene clearly shows the violent act of the police against a citizen, who asks the police why they are hitting him, while later he tries to escape from their hands in great pain.
The event caused an immediate reaction of the citizens, who subsequently gathered and attacked the police with stones.
The area of Nea Zmirni was lit for several hours by spontaneous protests by residents. As a result of the protests, 29 people were detained, while residents of the area have called for protests in the coming days.
Following the release of the video, the Attica police directorate announced that it would open an internal investigation into the case, but so far no police officer implicated in cases of violence against citizens has been penalized.
