Boxes of pencils, clothes and hats were among the items seized at children’s shops in Saudi Arabia, with rainbow symbols and trans or homosexual symbols, which authorities said contradicted Islam and public morality.
Saudi media said that the control campaign in stores was part of the ban on homosexuality, which is illegal in the country, writes the British The Guardian.
The action against the shops in the capital Riyadh was reported by the state station Al Ekhbariya.
“We are checking articles that oppose Islam and promote homosexual colors for the new generation,” the trade ministry official said in a report.
Pointing to the rainbow flag, the journalist added: “The gay flag is present in the markets of Riyadh, and these colors send a poisonous message to children.”
The report did not detail how many stores were targeted but raised awareness of the widespread phenomenon in the western world.
Saudi Arabia has also refused to show some Western films depicting or reflecting sexual minorities or LGBTQ references by canceling some contracts with Disney.
Yesterday’s Saudi news also showed images from the banned scenes of the movie “Doctor Strange” where children were seen waving the rainbow flag.
Also banned in the country is the latest animated film from Disney, ‘Lightyear’, where in one scene there are kisses on the lips between people of the same sex, as it has been banned in at least 12 other countries around the world.
Saudi Arabia had lifted the cinema ban measure in late 2017 as part of social reform led by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
The country already collected $ 238 million in ticket sales in 2021, according to a report by Variety magazine.
