The American Chamber of Commerce has commented on the imprisonment of former Interior Minister Saimir Tahiri.
In a statement, President Enio Jaço writes that this decision has lit the first signal that Justice in Albania is starting to wake up.
However, he says the decision for the former minister does not mean that justice in our country today is perfect.
According to Jaços, where can be a long start in time.
The full response of the Head of the American Chamber of Commerce, Enio Jaco:
The sentencing of the former Minister of Interior, Saimir Tahiri has somewhat ignited the first signal that Justice in Albania is starting to wake up.
Despite the sentence that requires courage and a legal and professional “strong stomach”, the fact that officials or former officials at the highest levels of government can be punished is uprooting the primitive culture that underlies the problems in Albania. A phenomenon raised with concern by the American Chamber of Commerce about the injustices that honest businesses have suffered at the courts for years, which also keeps foreign investors away.
But the decision for the former minister does not mean that Justice today is “perfect”. People have a right to be skeptical, because Albania in its history has almost never recognized the Rule of Law, suffered from a “Distorted Justice” under the communist regime, and then suffered a Capture of it after the ’90s.
This can be a long start in time, however lukewarm it has made some honest people feel a little better today, some to be silent and wait further and some dishonest but powerful ones to feel embarrassed , and maybe in a panic! But for justice to begin to enjoy the credibility of the people it will take time, and more such real deeds, to begin to give its effects.
