At least 20 of the 80 migrants dumped at sea by smugglers in Djibouti have lost their lives.
IOM Regional Director for East Africa and the African Gulf, Muhammed Abdiker, said on Twitter that at least 20 of the 80 migrants thrown by a smuggling ship bound for Yemen died off the coast of Djibouti’s Obock town.
Recalling that thousands of young Africans are trying to cross into Yemen to reach the Gulf countries, Abdiker stated that this was the third similar tragedy in the last six months and that more than 70 people have died so far.
Migrant smugglers, for fear of security guards, occasionally throw migrants into the sea to escape.
