A Russian-led military alliance will send troops to Kazakhstan, following an invitation from the local president, who sought help to deal with the country’s unrest and escalating protests.
The peacekeepers belong to a body of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), which is made up of allied countries of the former Soviet Union. Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Yomart Tokayev has previously called for assistance to the military alliance between Russia, Belarus, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan was the one who announced that the troops would be stationed in Kazakhstan for a short period of time, until order and calm are restored, but did not explain in the meantime how many soldiers will be sent to the troubled country.
The White House and the United Nations have urged Kazakh authorities to show restraint in dealing with the crisis. Washington also dismissed what it called “crazy Russian claims” that behind the mass demonstrations was the American hand, calling them “absolutely false and a clear part of Russia’s standard disinformation book.”
Kazakhstan has been rocked since the beginning of the year by protests, which escalated on Wednesday into clashes with police. A state of emergency was declared in the country after protests over rising fuel prices escalated into clashes and demonstrators attacked government buildings. Death is also reported, but so far there is no concrete data on the figures.
