The Israeli Channel 13 reported yesterday that Russian S-300 missile systems fired at Israeli planes returning from attacks on Iranian plants there last week.
The report further said that the unprecedented incident occurred on Friday when an Israeli plane had bombed targets in the northwestern Syrian city of Masyaf, and points to a policy shift between Russia and Israel.
“Syrian S-300 anti-aircraft batteries opened fire on Israeli planes leaving the area,” the report said, adding that they were operated by the Russian military and could not fire without their approval.
The report added that “the radar failed to be installed on target, so the systems do not pose a serious threat to Israeli Air Force fighters.”
If confirmed, this is the first time the S-300 system has been used against Israeli aircraft in Syria, which have carried out hundreds of attacks inside the country, against what are alleged to be arms shipments to the Hezbollah group and other plants linked to Iran.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said “four fighters were killed in Israeli attacks on Iranian plants,” without mentioning their nationality.
The Masyaf area is reportedly used as a base for Iranian forces and has been repeatedly hit in recent years by attacks attributed to Israel.
The development could be a deterioration of ties between Israel and Russia following the latter’s invasion of Ukraine.
Israel and Russia have recently set up a direct “deconflict” hotline to prevent accidental military clashes in Syria.
