Russian journalist and Nobel Peace Prize winner Dmitry Muratov will auction his medal to help Ukrainian refugees.
He is concerned about the disappearance of independent media in his country, as he points out that fewer and fewer people are supporting Moscow’s military campaign.
Muratov is the longtime co-founder and editor-in-chief of Novaya Gazeta, a Kremlin-critical newspaper founded in 1993 with Nobel Peace Prize money.
For years she challenged austerity measures against the opposition media, but in March her activity was suspended after it became a crime punishable by 15 years in prison for reporting on the government.
“My country invaded another country, Ukraine. There are now 15.5 million refugees. “We thought for a long time about what we could do and we thought that everyone should donate something dear to them, important to them.” Muratov told Reuters.
His medal will be sold by Heritage Auctions on June 20, World Refugee Day, with the support of the award committee.
