After two weeks of relative calm, the mayor of Kiev warned residents of the capital that their return was uncertain.
The weapons factory destroyed by a Russian missile fired from the air, had produced at least one of the missiles that sank the Russian warship Moskva, writes the British daily “The Guardian”.
Friday’s attack was considered by both sides as the strongest blow of revenge by the Kremlin after the sinking of the important Russian warship in the Black Sea.
It was also a warning that the war in the Ukrainian capital is not even nearing its end.
According to the state-owned weapons company in Ukraine, the Vizar factory near Kiev International Airport was producing Neptune missiles, one of which struck the Russian warship Moskva, which sank the day before.
The attack was followed by other explosions in the early hours of Saturday, when Russian forces bombed a military factory in the Darnytsky area of the capital Kiev.
“There were a total of five blows,” said Andrei Sizov, a 47-year-old owner of a nearby lumber mill. “One of my employees was in the office at the time of the explosion and was thrown up by force. “They are taking revenge for the destruction of Moscow.”
Emergency workers and doctors continue to work at the scene to clarify the number of victims.
Russia’s defense ministry said it had used a long-range precision-guided missile to strike the plant.
This was Russia’s first attack on the Ukrainian capital since the withdrawal from the Kiev suburbs, at a time when shops were reopening and citizens were starting to take to the streets.
The latest attacks came as no surprise as Russia’s defense ministry pledged to strike targets in Kiev in response to what it called “terrorist attacks and sabotage” carried out by the “Ukrainian nationalist regime”.
In Wednesday’s incident, the Russian warship had exploded after two Neptune rockets hit its ammunition depot.
The Kremlin did not provide details of possible casualties on the warship, nor did it publish photos of the wrecked vehicle, Russian journalists spoke nervously to Ukrainians after the sinking of the famous warship.
