The visit of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lvrov to Serbia has been canceled after neighboring countries closed the airspace for his plane, a senior Russian Foreign Ministry official told the Interfax news agency, Reuters reports.
The source confirmed media reports in Serbia, which said that Bulgaria, Northern Macedonia and Montenegro had closed the airspace for the plane that would carry the Russian chief diplomat to Belgrade on Monday.
“Our diplomacy must advance teleportation,” the source was quoted as saying.
The Russian Foreign Ministry has not yet commented on the report.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Skopje confirmed to Radio Free Europe on Sunday that Northern Macedonia has rejected the request of the Embassy of the Russian Federation to use the airspace of this country for the flight of the plane of the Russian Foreign Minister, who has warned that he will visit Belgrade on Monday.
The request of the Russian Embassy was made despite the fact that Northern Macedonia on February 28 imposed air sanctions on Russia, after the occupation of Ukraine on February 24.
Serbia, a country with close cultural ties to Russia, has faced pressure to take a stand on Russia’s war in Ukraine and has not joined Western sanctions against Moscow.
Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Serbian counterpart, Alexander Vucic, agreed last month for Russia to continue sending natural gas to Serbia, while supplies to some countries have been blocked because they have refused to pay in Russian rubles.
