Russian forces have attacked the Zhaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. The fire broke out in the early hours of Friday morning, but Ukrainian teams rushed to extinguish the flames.
The fire was extinguished at 6:20 a.m. local time, about an hour after it was confirmed that firefighters arrived at the scene. The background radiation levels were normal.
In a Facebook post, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russian troops of carrying out a “terrorist attack” by deliberately firing on the plant to endanger the lives of millions.
“Russian tanks, equipped with thermal images, are firing on atomic blocks. They know what they are shooting at. “They are preparing for this (attack),” Zelensky said in the post, adding that our boys are keeping it atomic. The power station is safe. ”
“The very fact that Russia is launching attacks near Ukraine’s nuclear power plants is extremely dangerous,” Zelensky said, referring to the Chernobyl tragedy and its victims.
“There are 15 nuclear reactors in Ukraine. If one of them blows, this is the end for all, this is the end of Europe. “The whole of Europe will have to be evacuated,” he said.
“No country other than Russia has ever fired on the reactors of a nuclear power plant. “For the first time, for the first time in history,” Zelensky added, urging European leaders to “wake up now” and stop Russian forces “before this war turns into a nuclear disaster.”
