Ukrainian authorities have accused Russia of trying to block the eastern city of Lysychansk.
Serhiy Haidai, Luhansk regional governor, said Russian forces were trying to block the city from the south. Lysychansk and its neighboring town of Severodonetsk were hit by artillery fire and airstrikes this morning.
Both cities have become the focal point of Russia’s offensive aimed at occupying the entire eastern region of the Donbas. Yesterday, Ukraine said it had ordered the withdrawal of troops from Severodonetsk.
Military analyst Oleg Zhdanov said some of those soldiers were now heading to Lysychansk.
However, Russia’s move to disrupt the city will give the retreating troops some time.
