Ukrainian intelligence said yesterday that a group of Russian elites were plotting to overthrow Russian President Vladimir Putin to stop the war and restore ties with the West.
“Poisoning, sudden illness, accident – Russian elites are considering Putin’s departure,” a post on Facebook of the intelligence directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine.
The ministry further claimed that “influential people” were joining Russia to “remove Putin from power as soon as possible, to restore ties with the West after the war in Ukraine.”
The intelligence agency even added that Alexander Bortnikov, director of federal intelligence services and a member of Putin’s inner circle, was being considered as a possible successor.
The Ukrainian agency claimed that Bortnikov and Putin had broken ties since Putin blamed him for “fatal miscalculation” in the slow advance of the military in Ukraine.
“Bortnikov and his department were responsible for analyzing the situation in Ukraine and the capabilities of its army,” the Ukrainian directorate wrote.
They added that intelligence came from Russian sources who said that several options were being considered for removing Putin from power, including “and with possible assassinations.”
Global sanctions have increased pressure on Putin, who believed his invasion of Ukraine would last only a few days, but is now in its fourth week.
