The Russian ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva, Gennady Gatilov, said today that the purpose of the operation in Ukraine “is not the invasion of Ukraine.”
He added that Moscow “is not isolated in its actions”, although earlier a UN resolution massively condemned the invasion of Ukraine.
“The purpose of the Russian operation is clear: denationalization and demilitarization. “We will not stay in Ukraine militarily and we will not invade the country.”
“I am not aware of the military plan but I know the political plan which is as I described it,” Gatilov said.
Asked if Moscow felt isolated in its actions, he replied: “I would not say we are isolated, we have a number of countries that support our position, such as China, India and a number of other countries.”
“We know that a number of countries are under pressure from the US to behave in a certain way and many of them can not resist.”
Gatilov added that Moscow’s actions come in response to those of the Zelinski government:
“We have said that what Zelensky and his regime are doing is unacceptable.”
“We had tolerated this situation for 8 years, but now the red lines have been crossed, so we have no choice but to use military means.”
