The Russian ambassador to Britain told the BBC he did not believe his country would use tactical nuclear weapons in the fight against Ukraine.
Andrei Kelin said that under Russian military rules, such weapons are not used in conflicts like this. Russia has very strict provisions for their use, he said, mainly when the existence of the state is endangered.
“It has nothing to do with the current operation.” he said Sunday Morning.
When Vladimir Putin deployed his nuclear forces on high alert in late February, shortly after the invasion, it was widely perceived as a warning.
Putin blamed the development of aggression by the West and NATO. But UK Secretary of Defense Ben Wallace called it an attempt to distract people from “what is going wrong in Ukraine”, saying Russia was behind in the invasion plan.
Tactical nuclear weapons can be used at relatively short distances, as opposed to “strategic” nuclear weapons which can be fired at much longer distances. Russia is thought to have about 2,000 tactical nuclear weapons.
