Germany has decided to raise the alarm of its emergency gas plan amid fears that Russia will cut off supplies if Western countries refuse to pay for Russian gas in rubles.
“A crisis room will be created in the ministry,” said German Economy Minister Robert Habeck, after the G7 states refused to comply with Moscow’s request.
The “first precautionary measure” is aimed at securing gas supplies, Habeck said. According to him, gas reserves are currently at 25 percent of capacity. The minister acknowledged that stopping supplies from Russia would have “serious” consequences, although he indicated that supplies had not yet been stopped.
Robert Habeck:The Kremlin says it will only accept payments in rubles for gas supplies to European Union countries. But we will not accept the violation of private agreements on gas deliveries.
Germany is heavily dependent on Russian gas for its energy needs as 55 percent of its supplies were piped through Russia, before Moscow began invading Ukraine on February 24. The Kremlin is not backing down from its position, but continues to push the idea of other countries paying for Russian gas in rubles, otherwise Moscow will cut off supplies.
“We will not do charity and send free gas to Western Europe,” said spokesman Dimitri Peskov.
