Since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, Ukrainian officials and human rights organizations have raised the alarm over the possible use of thermobaric weapons or “vacuum bombs.”
On March 9, the British Ministry of Defense said that Russia had confirmed that it was using weapons in Ukraine.
Thermobaric weapons absorb oxygen from the surrounding air to generate a high-temperature explosion, producing a long-lasting blast wave that destroys everything around it.
On the other hand the US says it has seen indications that Russia is dropping bombs without a precise target on Ukraine.
Ukrainian officials are increasingly accusing Russia of deliberately targeting civilians, but Russia has insisted it is using precision-guided ammunition and hitting military targets.
The comments from the US came shortly after Ukraine accused Russia on Wednesday of bombing a maternity hospital in the port city of Mariupol.
The West also warns that Vladimir Putin could use chemical weapons in Kiev.
They said a horrific attack on the Ukrainian capital could be launched after Russian forces overcome logistical problems with troops heading towards Kiev.
