Russia has successfully tested the hypersonic Zircon cruise missile, which flew at a distance of close to 1,000 kilometers, the Russian Defense Ministry said on May 28.
The rocket was launched from the Barents Sea and hit the target in the White Sea, the ministry said. A video released by Russian authorities shows the rocket being launched from a ship into the sky on a steep trajectory.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has said the Zircon missile is part of the new generation of weapons system.
Hypersonic missiles travel nine times faster than the speed of sound, and Russia has previously conducted Zircon tests, launching missiles from warships and submarines.
The Russian military has suffered heavy losses of troops and equipment during the occupation of Ukraine, which began on February 24. But Moscow continues to test weapons, in an attempt to demonstrate the power of its missiles.
Last month, Russia tested a new intercontinental ballistic missile, the Sarmat, which can carry ten or more nuclear warheads.
