The latest blow to the international arena, Russia comes from the United Nations World Tourism Agency, which voted to suspend this country from its ranks due to aggression in Ukraine.
Most of the Agency’s 160 member states have supported the decision, although their exact number is not yet known.
Two-thirds of the vote was needed to pass the motion. Ahead of the vote on its suspension, Russia announced that it was leaving the agency. “The status quo is clear: the promotion of peace tourism and universal respect for human rights. Only member states that respect them can be part of this body, said its secretary general, Zurab Pololikashvili.
“Actions will always have consequences. Peace is a fundamental human right. Guaranteed for everyone. “Without exceptions,” he added. The Russian Foreign Ministry described the decision as politically motivated and, consequently, illegitimate. “It is estimated that the vote was motivated by anti-Russian propaganda,” said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.
According to him, Russia’s decision to leave the World Tourism Agency will not have a negative impact. “The tourism sector, especially domestic tourism, will continue to develop. “Opportunities for foreign tourism are also open, depending on the competition situation and quality,” he said.
